PROLOGUE

The editor of Jackson House had told me that he was preparing a collection of travel diaries and that if I had one I should send it on to him. When I reread mine from 1960 and 1964, for reasons I don’t know how to explain, I somehow didn’t feel like publishing them. I then proposed Our Trip by Lucio Herrera. To tell the truth I was afraid it would be rejected since it did not correspond to the expectations of those who read works of this genre. But they accepted and included it in one of the beautiful volumes—bound in red imitation leather with gold letters—of one of the many collections that Jackson House sold, along with its polished wood bookcase. As the travel diary of my friend Herrera probably sleeps in the waiting room of people who don’t read, beside Timon’s Book of Orators, the tomes of Willie Durant, the illustrated hundredth anniversary edition of Don Quixote and a Martin Fierro bound in golden cowhide, I decided to publish it in this volume, on sale in good bookstores.
